Just A Seed: The Life of A Poppy

The life of a poppy seed is short, but very beautiful!

The poppy flower bud.  Little does it know the long journey it is about to embark on!  From bud to flower to pod to seed and FINALLY to our shower.

Poppy flowers come in a variety of colors, including pink!  They can be either double (as in the picture) or single.  I'm not really a fan of the single poppies.  Why would you want a single row of petals when you could have this gorgeous beauty?
Sadly, poppy flowers don't last very long.  So enjoy them while they last!

After the petals fade and fall the poppy pod stands tall and proud.  The poppy's pod has an important job.  It protects the precious seeds and allows them to fully mature and dry in the safety of its circular shell.  The green pods contain seeds that are not dry.  The green pods are very difficult to open, but once the pods dry to the correct point, little 'doors' at the top of the pod open and the seeds can escape.  A light breeze or a passing human will stir the pods and they scatter their seeds in all directions.  Sometimes the seeds will travel several dozen feet away from the original pod.  The pods act as tiny catapults!

Each beautifully designed poppy pod holds hundreds of tiny seeds.
These seeds can be collected and planted next year or they can be used in a variety of interesting items, including soap!

The finally step in the life of our poppy seeds: Lemon Poppy Seed soap colored with natural safflower powder.  These little poppy seeds have traveled from bud to flower to pod to seeds and now will work as powerhouse exfoliaters to get our skin smooth.

In life,
we can only hope to be as beautiful or as useful as the humble poppy seed.

Blue Moon Wisteria

I forgot to post about my Blue Moon wisteria!  This is the first year I have ever had a flower on my wisteria vine (bush? tree?).
It's been growing for 4 years.  It is VERY hardy.  I don't protect it at all in the winter and it's in a fairly exposed area.  So Blue Moon wisteria really is hardy in Minnesota zone 4!

This is what it looked like to start out.

I wasn't sure what it was going to look like when it bloomed, because I've never seen a wisteria bloom.

It was more purple than blue, but it shows up very blue in pictures.  I bought this vine at Menard's, of all places, for about $25.  I go back every year and ask them if they have any more.  Every year they look at me like I'm crazy - "Wisteria?  What's that?"

I'm Baaaaack

Hey everybody!

I'm back!

New computer and tons of pics and stories to show you.

Just as a side note - I did not buy a Dell, because they tried to bait and switch. They offered me one computer for a great price, then canceled my order and said I could order a different (not as nice) computer for twice the price.

Ha!

I bought an HP instead and got some really nice free upgrades.

The moral of this story for Dell is: Don't mess with a Blogger. Remember the Cupcake Nazi?

Birds, Bees and Blooms

Yesterday, I stalked a hummingbird in the garden.
I tried and tried to get a good picture of him (or her?), but he was so fast.
He also didn't like it when I got too close to him, so I had to sneakily zoom in from a distance.

I'm not sure if it is the same pair, or their children, but a pair of hummingbirds nest in the lilac bush on the edge of my yard. They have been raising their tiny little babies in the same spot for at least 5 years.

This was the best pic I took of him.

Here is his pretty green back.

He really likes every painted lady (flower).

He is so tiny!

Some water lilies in my pond.

Summer sunflower.
Doesn't that just look like pure Summer?

Garden Closeups

These are pictures I took before I left on vacation.
The lettuce is eaten, the birds are already out of the nest and the flowers have dropped their petals. That's the nice thing about photography - it holds a moment forever.

They are now eating my strawberries.

Pink Poppy and Purple Allium

Just a few flowers from my garden.
I was afraid that the poppy would bloom while I was on vacation, but it burst a few blooms out yesterday. Just for me of course ;)
The allium in the bed close to my house are still blooming. They are a shorter variety, but the flowers are massive.

I bought a new camera!
Loving the macro and zoom.

My favorite poppy. Every year my Mom tries to convince me to divide it, but this poppy doesn't like to be moved or disturbed, so she fails to convince me every year.
Actually, I love to move things around in my garden, but this is the one thing that's stayed in the same place. I'm too afraid to move it, because I love it so much.

Blue Hyacinths

I love these blue hyacinths!
I planted them 2 years ago and thought they might not come back this year.
People kept telling me that hyacinths would only come back one year and then disappear, so it was a waste of time to plant them.
Ha!
I plan on planting more this year. They are the brightest blue color and the scent is amazing. I can smell it from 5 feet away. Gorgeous!

And of course, Tansy with the hyacinths.

And Catty too!

Relax.

Tulips and Tansy

Just a few pictures of tulips in my garden and Tansy.
Like most rabbits, Tansy loves the taste of tulip leaves.
